Fry a sweet won ton for dessert

(Won tons are stuffed with fresh berries and mascarpone, Nutella and bananas, then lightly fried)

Won ton wrappers and I have been canoodling lately. Call it what you will, but these little squares of dough lend themselves to a love affair in the kitchen.
They remind me of my beloved ravioli and tortelloni, but without the also beloved fuss in making them.

Did I say I could not get enough of the pot stickers I recently made, stuffed with a savory kale filling? All true. Now those pre-made pieces of endless possibility enticed me with a pleasant serenade — "Stuff me sweetly and fry me up," they cajoled one day.

I gave in, and discovered a treat that is easy to make with fresh fruit and other pantry staples, such as Nutella (who among us does not own up to having a stash of that?) and mascarpone (ditto).

(Sweetened mascarpone and berries make an easy filling for fried won tons)

Sweetly stuffed, lightly fried, then dusted with confectioner's sugar, these won tons make a quick dessert that is really delicious. (Note to self: Don't be too eager to pop one in your mouth when they are done, as the filling really retains the heat .)

(Nutella and sliced bananas is an easy filling that is ready in no time)

The filling possibilities are endless.
I made about a dozen of the berry-mascarpone ones and another dozen with the banana-Nutella filling. Just look at that bite, above; doesn't it make your collective mouths water? The Nutella and banana combo is a heavenly marriage in the middle, the banana softening and warming in the oozey goodness of Nutella. The won tons are delightful dunked in a sweetened plain yogurt flavored with vanilla and a little maple syrup.

Sweetly Stuffed Won Tons with Fresh Fruit and Nutella

Ingredients:
  1. Won ton wrappers
  2. Strawberries, blueberries, bananas
  3. Mascarpone
  4. Nutella
  5. Confectioner's sugar
  6. Vanilla
  7. Cinnamon
  8. Maple syrup
  9. Vegetable oil for frying
For the berry-cheese won tons:
  • Mix about 1/2 cup of mascarpone with a tablespoon or so of confectioner's sugar. Add a splash of vanilla and a dash of cinnamon.
  • Spread a little of the mixture in the center of a won ton wrapper that is turned so the points make a diamond facing you.
  • Top with a few berries (slice the strawberries); blueberries can be left whole.
  • Fold the points of the won ton together; brush with a little water to seal; pinch close.
  • Line them up on a baking sheet as you prepare them all.
For the banana-Nutella won tons:
  • Prepare in the same manner as above, substituting the Nutella for the mascarpone and sliced bananas for the berries.
Method:
  • Heat a heavy skillet with a couple inches of vegetable oil.
  • Drop the won tons into the hot oil and fry until golden brown.
  • Drain on a paper bag.
  • Plate them and dust them with a little confectioner's sugar.
  • Serve with a side of yogurt for dipping.

  1. I have never cooked with wontons. It is something I really want to try, esp potstickers, and now this gorgeous dessert - very versatile! I can just imagine the crisp bite. Have a wonderful weekend.

  2. Same to you, Mango!
I think you would have a grand time playing with won tons in the kitchen. I have to say, I prefer the savory to the sweet.

  3. These look delicious. I once experimented with banana and Nutella filled wonton. They were delicious, but it took me days to get my kitchen clean again. One of my many "one-time" experiments. I really like your blog and will be back often. I hope you are having a wonderful day. Blessings...Mary

  5. Go for it, Claudia! They were so delicious.

    Hi Mary!
What happened; did they explode? I found the frying oil had to be hot, but not too hot and the won tons had to be well sealed.
I'm coming over to your kitchen for a peek, now. Put the coffee on, please.
    Thanks for visiting. :-)
