Pantyhose support wayward pumpkin

How do you tame a rampant, renegade pumpkin? Package it in old pantyhose.

This simple trick will help support a heavy squash with a mind of its own, in this case, an errant pumpkin that grew up and over the fence and is dangling its weight on a slim stem.

Simply take a pair of old pantyhose and position the pumpkin, or other heavy squash, in the waistband. Use the legs of the pantyhose to tie the squash to the fence, like a sling. I added a couple safety pins to help secure the waistband to the fence.

This is a good way to keep the stem from breaking under the weight of the squash, and the pantyhose will expand as the squash continues to grow.

You can also feel good about recycling pantyhose that tend to run.

Dress up a dangling squash if you have one and offer a little support.

  1. Great idea. I may try this with a squash hanging from my yew plant.

  7. Oh, I love that, Alessandra - the nana's look! What a great idea to use old shower caps for cauliflower - I'm thinking to keep it blanched? and/or to keep the bugs at bay?

Hi, Jes. Holey hose - good one!
    You're ambitious - I don't think I could read 1,000 posts these days. :)
